26 September 2011
Jenny Marra MSP has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament opposing plans to merge Abertay and Dundee universities.
Talking about the motion, Jenny said:
"Strong opposition has emerged in Dundee and beyond over the weekend.
"People in Dundee are not happy with the SNP trying to force our universities into merging, when neither of them sought it.
"I hope that Joe Fitzpatrick MSP and Shona Robison MSP will reflect the feelings of their constituents and sign the motion.
"Parliamentarians need to show the people in Dundee and in other universities who will be worries about these developments that they want to see the survival of all our universities."
The motion was lodged on Monday 26th. September and reads :
Don’t Merge Abertay and Dundee Universities : That the Parliament is concerned at the prospect of the University of Abertay merging with the University of Dundee; considers that any attempt to do so is likely to result in the University of Abertay being subsumed into the University of Dundee; recognises the unique and distinct educational experiences offered by both universities as separate institutions; appreciates that the University of Abertay has a strong record of educating students from non-traditional backgrounds; appreciates that the University of Abertay has a pivotal role in the local Dundee economy, and believes that any merger will risk jobs in both universities.
