Jim McGovern gives his support to striking university staff
1 November 2013
Dundee West MP Jim McGovern has given his support to university staff from the UNISON, Unite and UCU trade unions who are holding a one day strike to protest against a below inflation pay increase offer.
University staff from the University of Dundee and Abertay University are involved in the strike.
Jim McGovern said :
“I wholeheartedly support today’s strike by university staff across the country.
"In Dundee we have two hugely successfully universities that have added an immense amount to the city.
"That success was delivered by the hard working staff.
“The below inflation pay offer of 1% fails to properly reward the staff for their efforts.
"Since 2008 they have had a 13% decrease in their wages, when you account for inflation.
"As the costs of living have risen dramatically over this time university staff are struggling to make ends meet despite being in work.
“This is a national strike, but in Scotland the pay settlement is the responsibility of the Scottish Government.
"The SNP have spoken loudly about providing free education that is of high quality.
"The well being of the staff that provides that quality should not be sacrificed in order for the SNP’s promises to be met.
"I urge them to sit down with the unions and to come up with a pay offer that better reflects the role staff play in delivering Scotland’s world class higher education.”
