Warm Home Discount
2 June 2014
The figures revealed by the Children’s Society are shocking.
It is unacceptable that 1,843 households in Dundee West are going cold because they are not eligible for the Warm Home Discount.
It is my view that the scheme needs to be reformed by the government to ensure that the energy companies support all vulnerable households.
It is unfair for the companies to be allowed to pick and choose which households get support and which do not.
The scheme needs to be extended to include all vulnerable households, and it needs to be made compulsory for the energy companies to pass the discount onto those households.
It is disgraceful in this day and age that excessive energy bills can cause so much hardship.
I strongly support Labour’s plan to freeze energy bills, as well as our plans to fundamentally reform the dysfunctional energy market.
Extending the Warm Home Discount would be a sensible and fair step towards ending energy poverty in Dundee and the rest of the country.
