Jim McGovern slams Government Work Programme

2 July 2013

Dundee West MP Jim McGovern today slammed the government’s Work Programme following disappointing new statistics that show Dundee West is the worst performing area in Scotland.

Mr McGovern called on the Department for Work & Pensions in the House of Commons to look urgently at the struggling Work Programme.

While acknowledging that the percentage of those finding work because of the scheme rose from 1.4% to 5.6%, he strongly condemned the fact that 94.4% of those who did take part in the scheme did not find work as a result and that Dundee was the worst performing area in Scotland.

In December last year it was revealed that at 1.4% success rate Dundee was the worst place in the United Kingdom for the government’s flagship back to work scheme.

Jim McGovern said;

“These new statistics are bad news for Dundee and for the government.

“Despite assurances that the situation would improve Dundee is still the worst performing place in Scotland. This is totally unacceptable.”

“For more than 90% of participants in Dundee the truth is that doing nothing is probably more productive then taking part in this scheme.

“At a cost of £5 billion pound to the taxpayer this is a farcical situation.”

Mr McGovern concluded;

“Dundee needs jobs and it needs a back to work programme that actually works.

“This government have failed on both counts.

“I am calling on the lacklustre UK government and the complacent Scottish Government to take action to create jobs and get people into work.”
