Jim McGovern calls for action over Dundee job losses
8 November 2012
Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West, has today called on the Scottish and UK governments to investigate what more can been done to avoid job losses in Dundee as Day International announces 43 redundancies from their workforce of 167.
The factory, which has been open in Dundee for 50 years, announced that job losses would be necessary in order to see the factory remain open.
Jim McGovern said;
“It is clear that despite the warm words of the Scottish and UK governments businesses are continuing to struggle in Dundee.
“This is far too many people now facing the dole.”
“Whatever Edinburgh and London can do to support businesses and to keep people in jobs they must do, but I fear in Dundee’s case this is not happening.”
Mr McGovern concluded,
“I have spoken with the full time trade union GMB official who represents the affected staff at Day International, and like me they are greatly troubled by this decision.
“The GMB will be working with management to fully support any workers that will be affected, and they will push to ensure that any redundancies are voluntary.”
