Jim McGovern comments on Child Poverty figures
15 October 2014
Responding to research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies released by The Campaign to End Child Poverty that found 28% of children in Dundee are living in poverty after housing costs, Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West said:
“Today’s announcement of a fall in unemployment appears to show good news but these figures showing more than 1 in 4 children in Dundee are living in poverty after housing costs clearly demonstrates that there is a stark cost of living crisis and that this government does not make work pay.
“The government has to reassess its existing policies and tackle the root causes of the cost of living crisis before more children are dragged into poverty, particularly soaring childcare costs which is why Labour has committed to introducing 25 hours of free childcare a week for 3 and 4 year olds and strengthening the minimum wage.”
