Jim McGovern calls for action over youth unemployment
18 January 2012
Dundee West MP Jim McGovern has called on the Scottish Executive and the UK government to take action over rising youth unemployment in the city.
Official statistics released today reveal that the number of unemployment benefit claimants in Dundee West has risen to 3,261 during December 2011.
This includes youth unemployment (18-24 year olds) reaching 995 claimants, 30.5% of all claimants in Dundee, above the average of 28.7% for Scotland as a whole.
Jim McGovern said,
"This is an unacceptable level of youth unemployment and more must be done to get these young people into work.
"We must ensure that these young people get the best start to their working lives, and I fear that is not happening for too many young people."
"I welcome the move by the Scottish Executive to declare Dundee’s port an Enterprise Zone, but we need to know the exact details sooner rather than later."
"Over the last 12 months progress has been far too slow in attracting companies and creating jobs in the city, especially for young people.
"Warm words must now be matched with progress on the ground."
Mr McGovern concluded,
"The time for dithering from the Scottish Executive and UK government is over, we need to see schemes like the Enterprise Zone produce results, and the UK government must recognise that cutting too far and too fast is hurting the economy and is causing unemployment to rise in Dundee."
