Jim McGovern : Comment on SNP backs "Yes Alliance"
23 October 2014
Speaking on the decision of two SNP candidates for the deputy leadership of the party to back the ‘Yes Alliance,’ Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West said:
“When we’ve seen low employment figures, flat lining wages and increasing child poverty over the past few weeks, it’s clear that all the SNP can think about is dividing our nation when we need to come together to tackle these challenges and get the best for Scotland.
“They seem unable to admit the decision of the Scottish people who decisively rejected independence and voted to stay as a valued part of the United Kingdom, and contrary to Alex Salmond’s claim that the referendum was a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity, they seem determined to rerun it rather than resolving the issues that affect Scottish people.
“The suggestion that the SNP are seriously expecting to stand aside to field a candidate for the Greens or even the Radical Campaign for Independence in Dundee in the General Election is simply ridiculous.
"They need to accept the referendum result and stop putting their party’s interests before the interests of Scotland, for in May 2015, independence is not on the ballot paper, but the jobs, opportunities and futures of the people of Scotland and Dundee are.”
