Jim McGovern condemns Kemback Street Day Centre Closure Decision
30 October 2012
Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West, has condemned the decision made by the SNP run Dundee City Council to close the Kemback Street care centre.
The council met last night and despite efforts from the council’s opposition Labour group, the vote to close the centre was passed 16 to 13.
The centre has 20 years' experience of treating vulnerable people, many with severe disabilities.
There are fears that as the council’s privatisation plans for care services goes ahead the current expertise of care staff hired directly by Dundee City Council may be lost.
Jim McGovern signed the 4,000 strong petition, handed to SNP councillors last night, in July.
Jim McGovern said,
“The SNP in Dundee should be ashamed of themselves for making this decision to close the Kemback Street centre.
"The many people who rely on the facilities offered and care of the dedicated staff will be greatly troubled and inconvenienced by its closure.
“The separatists make a great deal of their commitment to protecting care services but when concrete decisions have to made at a local level those promises turn to nothing.”
Mr McGovern concluded,
“Dundee City Council needs to undertake an urgent review of care services across the city, and they must listen to care users, their families and staff as well as the Labour group and reverse this decision immediately.”
