Dundee remains with the highest Job Seekers Allowance rate of the 4 main Scottish cities , according to new official figures.
Data released yesterday from the Office of National Of National Statistics shows that last month there were 5,572 people claiming the unemployment-based benefit, representing a rate of 5.8 per cent.
The comparable rates for the other main Scottish cities were :
Glasgow 5.6% ; Aberdeen 1.9% ; Edinburgh 3.2%
Commenting on the figures , Councillor Kevin Keenan, Labour Group Leader on Dundee City Council said,
“We need to bring together the best resources of our city to tackle youth unemployment, and help provide more positive destinations for our school leavers
“We need greater opportunities of well-paid jobs and training for all of our unemployed and underemployed.
“We need new quality jobs to promote our city as a great place to live and work .”
Councillor Lesley Brennan, who works as an economist, said,
“There needs to be an end to the policies of a UK Government that has created low growth , insufficient new jobs and greater borrowing just to keep skilled people who want to work out of work.
“ Dundee’s economy needs a national insurance break for small businesses taking on new workers, a temporary cut in VAT, and accelerating investment in infrastructure to create new jobs in the city.”
