12 areas in Dundee where male unemployment is 10 per cent or more
Kevin Keenan
17 January 2012
Male unemployment rose in Dundee last month to 3,866.
This represents a a male unemployment rate of 8.5 per cent , or 1 man on 12 out of work.
There are now 12 areas in the city where the male unemployment rate is 10 per cent or more.
Commenting on the figures , Councillor Kevin Keenan , Labour group leader on Dundee City Council said,
"It is bleak news for the individuals affected and for the city that so many of its communities now have male unemployment rates in double figures.
" Many of levers that drive the economy are the responsibility of the Scottish Government and the Labour group on the council can and will work constructively with them when they propose to support businesses in the city, boost the local economy and get our people back to work.
" Labour is calling for a new approach by the UK Government.
"Unemployment is not a price worth paying to reduce the deficit so quickly.
" Labour would create jobs, help low-income families and assist small businesses to grow with a tax incentive for them to take on additional workers.
"This would be financed by measures that would include a tax on bankers’ bonuses."
