Dundee UNESCO City of Design2 December 2014
Dundee now has the unique achievement of being the UK’s first City of Design – a title bestowed on it by UNESCO.
Dundee’s latest prize is the international recognition of its creative talents and it shares the spoils of international Cities of Design status with Bilbao, Helsinki, Turin and Curitiba in Brazil.
The award acknowledges the city ‘s strength in fields as diverse as biochemical research, , comics, video games , Dundee Orange marmalade , its contemporary arts, and a new Waterfront with an imaginative outlook on the Tay with V&A Dundee at its forefront.
If, last year, Dundee had won the contest to become UK City of Culture 2017, we would now be celebrating two great title wins by the city, an international one for design and a national one for culture.
International honours do not come easily or frequently to cities such as Dundee that do not have relatively large populations, and that is a measure of the city’s achievement in winning this prestigious award
Dundee is a city of creative innovation, and so it is a city with the talent and crafts to do business with, and that business can only help create jobs for the people of our city.
