Supporting Respect for Shopworkers Week in USDAW's Freedom from Fear campaign
7 November 2014
I am standing up for shopworkers and their right to work free from the fear of verbal abuse, threats and violence.
That is why I am supporting USDAW's Respect for Shopworkers Week as part of their Freedom from Fear campaign next week to raise public awareness of the need to respect the rights of those who provide essential services in shops.
As their campaign slogan says, Abuse Is Not Part of the Job.
USDAW are calling on government to provide greater legal protection for shopworkers.
Acts that range from incivility and confrontation to intimidation and violence not only invade shopworkers ' rights; they also have a damaging effect upon businesses that work in and serve the community.
A recent survey by USDAW of a representative survey of its members found that 1 in 5 reported verbal abuse on a daily or weekly basis and nearly 1 in 10 reported threats of violence at least once a month.
USDAW's campaign runs from 10th-14th November
