Jim McGovern welcomes new creative industry funding for Dundee universities

16 August 2011

Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West, has welcomed the news that the Universities of Dundee and Abertay Dundee were to benefit from new funding to promote creative industries in the city.

The £16 million funding over four years will see the University of Dundee become the lead university in Scotland in the Arts and Humanities Research Council ‘Knowledge Exchange Hub’ project to promote the creative industries.

The Universities of Abertay Dundee and St Andrews will act as partner universities in this project.
The aim of the project is to establish research centres in the creative industries, and to promote links between academia and industry in order to promote the creation of creative businesses in the local area.

Jim McGovern said,

“This is excellent news for both Dundee and Abertay universities.

"They have both led Scotland’s efforts in promoting the creative industries in recent years, and this achievement shows that they have a bright future in these fields.

“I am confident that Dundee and Abertay will benefit greatly from this funding, and the creative industries will go on to form an even greater role in the life of the universities, the city and in our local economy.”

Jim McGovern concluded,

“We have seen with the computer games industry how beneficial it can be for universities, students and business when academia and industry work together.

"This funding will continue that great work into more diverse areas.

"This is great news for the city and for our economy"
