Jim McGovern calls for Parliamentary debate on Remploy
Jim McGovern, MP for Dundee West, today called on the Leader of the House of Commons to permit a debate in government time on the future of Remploy
This call comes as the consultation period for the Sayce Report, which recommended ceasing government support for Remploy, came to an end on October 17th.
It is feared that if all government support ends for Remploy there will be job losses at factories across the country, including the factory in Dundee.
Jim McGovern said;
"Remploy in Dundee, and across the country, provides valuable and skilled work to able-bodied and disabled workers, and has done so since the end of the Second World War.
"It would be a tragedy for Remploy’s committed workers if this government takes a decision that may put some of them unnecessarily on the dole.
"It would be bad news for local economies like those in Dundee which cannot afford more job losses; what we need is economic growth and job creation, not more unemployment."
Jim McGovern concluded,
"It is unfortunate that the government have decided not to allow for a debate in their time.
"However I will be continuing to push them to make sure that they disregard the Sayce report, and they commit to protecting jobs and working with Remploy well into the future."
